The U Visa is a humanitarian immigration option created to protect people who have suffered serious crimes in the United States. It recognizes the courage it takes to come forward—and offers protection, lawful status, and the opportunity to rebuild your life without fear.
If you were harmed by a crime and assisted—or are willing to assist—law enforcement, the U Visa may allow you to remain in the U.S. legally, work lawfully, and eventually apply for a green card. Most importantly, it provides survivors with a sense of safety and stability at a time when it is most needed.
Who May Qualify For a U Visa
You may be eligible for a U Visa if you:

Were the victim of a qualifying crime, such as domestic violence, sexual assault, assault, robbery, stalking, kidnapping, or human trafficking

Suffered physical or emotional harm

Have information about the crime

Have been, are being, or are willing to be helpful to law enforcement or government officials

Are admissible to the U.S., or qualify for a waiver
Certain qualifying family members may also be included, allowing survivors to protect their loved ones.

How the U Visa Process Works

Enforcement Certification
A signed certification (Form I-918, Supplement B) from law enforcement, a prosecutor, judge, or other authorized official is required. This confirms the survivor’s helpfulness in the investigation or prosecution. Without this certification, a U Visa cannot be approved.

Filing the U Visa Petition
Once certification is obtained, the petition is filed with USCIS along with evidence of the crime, proof of harm, and a personal declaration.

Work Authorization and Protection
Because U Visa processing times are lengthy, many applicants are placed on a waiting list. During this time, eligible applicants may receive work authorization and protection from removal.

Path to Permanent Residence
After three years in U Visa status, many applicants may be eligible to apply for a green card.
